Deficiencies of Lakeside Elementary School
Lakeside Elementary School currently houses 3rd through 5th grade students that reside in the cities of Chisago City, Lindstrom, Center City and surrounding areas. The building is approximately 57,000 square feet and the original building was built in 1937. There are currently four (4) portable classrooms on-site that were brought into service in August of 2015. The building, while having multiple additions, has reached its maximum capacity to expand due to the size of the site which is only 7 acres. The mechanical and electrical systems need full replacement along with various other deferred maintenance needs that make the renovation of the building cost prohibitive versus the value of the building. The building is located on a frontage road of Highway 8, known to be one of the most dangerous highways in Minnesota, and Little Green Lake. Parking for parents and visitors is limited. If there is a program or special event, ie. conferences, DARE, music program, classroom play, etc., parents and visitors need to park on the frontage road which creates a traffic hazard. The playground areas are not adequate for almost 600 students on the 7-acre parcel.
